What Kinds Of Accommodation Do The Codes Cover

The Codes cover larger student developments. There are two Codes:
  • the ANUK/Unipol Code of Standards for larger developments for student accommodation not managed and controlled by educational establishments – where 15 or more students live in one building, either in rooms off a central corridor, cluster flats or self-contained flats
  • the ANUK/Unipol Code of Standards for larger residential developments for student accommodation managed and controlled by educational establishments (which in the view of the relevant Government department means a university or college that provides and manages accommodation for studnets undertaking a full-time further or higher education course at the same establishment) – a development of any size so long as it is managed or under the control of the educational establishment.
On the face of it some developments may fall between these two types. For instance where student accommodation is provided by a commercial operator and an educational establishment working in partnership, there can be ambiguity about which partner is managing/controlling the development. To achieve clarity for prospective members and for the Codes’ administration, a schedule of test questions has been devised to determine which of the Codes is more appropriate in any given case.

Head-leased properties which are leased for under three years do not fall within the scope of the Code for halls managed/controlled by educational establishments. However, if they contain 15 or more students, they can be included in the other Code.
